1,2, Big Breath, Go
Rootin’ Tootin’ started with a real bang. It feels good to be learning something completely new from the ground up. I was talking with one of my students this week and said, “Sometimes it’s hard to remember what it’s like to be a beginner.” We were discussing air support and how much breath it takes to create a great bassoon sound and it reminded me of how similar that is to starting a business. Both require strength, consistency, and a willingness to push through resistance.
Speaking of air support, I’ve recently found my new favorite breathing exercise in the book Drills. It’s quickly becoming one of my top recommendations for teaching fundamentals. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly suggest you do! Especially if you want to deepen your own method to tone development.
Outside of lessons, I’ve been working on the next phase of accessories for the shop. This time involving dye (very exciting!). Texas has been treating us to some beautiful weather lately, so I’m hoping to work outdoors as much as possible. Maybe even make some reeds under the sun while I’m at it.
